iMessage Errors on iPad When Tethering

I recently updated both my iPhone and iPad to iOS 6. I've sent up the Messages on both of them to receive at my phone number and Apple ID (and have done this before) and on my home network receive iMessages on my iPhone, iPad and Mac mini simultaneously. I've noticed when I connect my iPad to my iPhone and tether (via bluetooth) I no longer receive messages on the iPad and get an error message whenever I try and send iMessages.

I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar set up and if it's worked for them?
