iMessage expansion?

I wonder if Apple will expand iMessage to include desktop functionality for Mac/PC? It could basically eliminate iChat (which FaceTime has sort of accomplished already, in a limited way). Maybe FaceTime and iMessage could even be merged on the Mac, since there's plenty of space to both write messages back and forth and webcam at the same time (same goes for iPad, really).
