While any sent or recieved iMessages are happily synced between my MacBook Air (Yos beta 5) and iPhone 6 (iOS 8.02) I've discovered that if I delete a text or conversation on either device it will still be on the other. Has it always been so?

Yes. Also, there are settings in iOS to delete messages after 2 or 30 days. But no such setting in OSX either. Sync does not seem to exist.
