So, I've searched the web for a discussion on this, and was unable to pinpoint my issue. However, I find it hard to believe I'm the only one bothered by this iMessage feature.

[I have an iphone 4, with the latest updates]

By default, if there is only one 'unread' conversation, iMessage will skip the message list and jump directly to that conversation. When there are multiple unread chats, this does not occur.

2 things bother me about this. 1) you can easily lose control of which messages are left unread, 2) you risk posting a followup comment in the wrong chat if it becomes the only unread message. This occurs, even if you remain in the correct chat, phone locks, and someone else messages; when you re-enter the app, you will be transported to the new chat.

Even if this is a convenience, there should be a setting to force the default action to always land on the message list.

This is partially me just venting, but if anyone has a solution, I'm all ears.

I've done this MULTIPLE times over the years on my iPhones, not just on iMessage. Several of those instances were the mortifying/embarrassing types. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, the normal text app does this as well.
