iMessage Login Greyed Out (10.8.1)

Hi all,

New MBA here with 10.8.1 - trying to setup iMessage for the first time and looks fine;

2 accounts;

1. Apple ID (@hotmail) with a secondary mail address of @me.com (iCloud)
2. Bonjour - can't remove this

All accounts verified with passwords etc, but the Log In option on the menu is greyed out.

Does this matter?
Will iMessage not work unless logged in ?
