iMessage .M4a files do not play

Hi,

I notice that if I record an M4a file in Quicktime on my Mac and try to send it via iMessage on iOS 10 it cannot be played. It used to work on iOS 9. Does anyone know if this is a bug or if they removed the functionality for some other reason?
