imessage on iphone question

I switched from sprint (android phone) where my number was both cell and google voice to verizon. With google voice I got texts on my phone and my ipad. I thought I could get my iphone texts on my ipad with imessage - but so far it is not working and I cannot figure out the point of imessage. Is there some way to make my texts to iphone show up on my ipad?

Its not texts (SMS) that it will sync across devices, but imessages.

imessages can only be sent and received by somebody on a iOS device or a Mac running mountain lion.

Are you signed in on your iCloud account on your iPad? iMessages are sent to the users email rather then the phone number like a text
