iMessage picture/video attachments

so, i was scanning through my text messages on my iMac and noticed that all the pictures and video attachments are gone. about a week ago, they were still there and i was able to see them and download them, now i cant even see a thumbnail of any of the pictures. How can i get the files back? is there a way to ? where are the files stored, maybe i can look around that folder.

thought they're stored on Apple's server and not locally after a certain period of time. someone correct me if I'm wrong.
