iPhone 12 Pro iMessage problem on phone calls

On my 12 Pro, when I’m on a phone call (tried with all options- 5g auto, 5g on, lte) and I try to text someone the message will send as a regular sms. This happens with conversations that are already iMessage conversations. My data is still working when I’m on the phone and I get speed texts that are at least 200/20. It’s intermittent too and some texts it’ll send as iMessage. When I’m not on a phone call I never have issues.
Anyone else having a similar issue? I was going to post this in iOS 14 but I think it’s specific to my iPhone 12 Pro because I didn’t have issues on my 11 pro max.
 
Surprised no one else has this issue. Can anyone try replicating it by being on a phone call and then trying to text people?
 
@Lammy I'm having the same issue with verizon on Esim. The moment I hang up the call it goes back to imessage but when I'm on a call everyone turns to green SMS

I changed to a physical sim (and also transferred service from At&t to Firstnet) and mine is working now. Not sure which fixed it though, the change of service or getting a physical sim 🤷🏼‍♂️
