iMessage receive at mobile number on iPad 1?

I've not used my iPad for a while (thanks to my MBP) but I powered it up earlier today anyway.

Is it possible to configure iMessage on an iPad 1 to receive at my mobile number or is the ipad 1 too prehistoric to allow this?

You need iOS 6 for that, and since the original iPad can't be updated to iOS 6... Sorry.
