Imessage recipient says "chat" plus a number

Any idea what is going on here? I received an imessage from someone and it reads chat816724729406116907

Does this mean it may come from a VoIP? Other messaging service? Thanks!

FWIW, I have this issue with several iMessages I have in my chat DB. All from known contacts (which I can decipher by reading the context of the message text). Did anyone ever figure out what the deal was with this behavior?
