iPad iMessage stopped syncing with my iPad 2 and iP5

It had been working for the longest time. And suddenly stopped. The iMessage toggle is still on in settings but not in sync with my phone. Anyone can tell me why or how to troubleshoot?

Try signing out and signing back in.

and make sure the apple id on the phone and iPad are linked....
