iMessage vs BBM?

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and have a general question about how iMessage works/will work in comparison to Blackberry Messenger.

With BBM, you have to share pin numbers with people and you can opt to give it out or not, with the new iMessage, anyone with an iOS device will be able to just automatically message you?

Again sorry if this is in the wrong place and if this has already been answered.

In the Keynote, it was implied that iOS would auto detect if the other person had a compatible iPhone and would convert the message automatically.
