iMessage went from "read" to "delivered"?

I texted someone yesterday who normally has their read receipts on. It said he read my text yesterday, but when I went back to the thread today, it says "delivered". How does that happen?
 
For some reason when I turn my phone off and then on again, it goes back to "read". Just a weird glitch, I guess.
