Is it safe to use iCloud with iMessage?

Even worth it ?

It is as safe as it can be. Nothing is really ever fully safe - anything can be hacked. I always say that everything is safe until it is not. If you have other data on there - pictures, files, etc., it is about the same amount of risk.

If it is worth it is up to you! For me, I do not need to be wasting space with old text messages. However, some people might want that history.

They use fake end to end encryption, meaning your messages cannot be intercepted and read, but Apple can decrypt it if law enforcement demands, or if someone at Apple falls for a fake warrant (this already happened).

So it is not as safe as can be, but it is relatively safe, and the risk might be worth the convenience, unless your job or identify makes you a special target for hackers.

I just want to add that when I said "safe as it can be," I meant in that every company says something is safe, but nothing is ever really safe (what I mentioned in the next sentence). I was not commenting on Apple's security level specifically. I just wanted to add to avoid any confusion!

Also worth pointing out that if you don't use 'Messages in iCloud', then your messages are stored in your iCloud Backups. So they are in iCloud one way or another. If you don't want them in iCloud, then you need to turn off iCloud Backups and Messages in iCloud. It goes without saying, but make sure you have a strong password and using 2FA.
