iMessages in CarPlay

Is there a way to get just a notification sound without CarPlay reading an iMessage? Seems like it’s either announce messages or not. I middle ground.

It doesn't give me any such alerts, and only reads them if I tell it to. Check this Apple support article for instructions on how to manage this.

Basically, it sounds like you have Announce Notifications turned on, as the article is saying to do to get the behavior you are seeing. You will want to turn it OFF instead.
