iMessages not importing into Message app new Mac

Hi all, I've just got a new MBP 13 Retina. I went to setup as a new Mac, upgraded straight away to El Capitan. All is good, but when I log into my Messages App, it doesn't download the iMessages from before. Should it do this, or will it only load messages from now on?
 
Make sure you signed into iCloud and iMessages on both the phone and the laptop. When I got a new laptop my messages came over when I signed into Messages on the laptop. However those messages were from my phone, not my old laptop.
 
Thanks, everything is the same on all my macs and idevices, and I'm logged in on all of them but it still doesn't work. It's puzzling!
