iMessaging HEIF Live Photos in iOS 11 to iPhone 6 and earlier?

I know that software decode for HEVC is supported on iOS 11 on A8 and earlier, but can you iMessage HEIF-based Live Photos taken on an iPhone 6s or 7 in iOS 11 to an iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 with iOS 11?

Or will they simply be sent as JPEGs?
