iMessenger not working anymore?

Ever since I updated my iPhone to it's latest OS version, I messenger does not seem to be working? do I have to switch this feature on somewhere in the settings?

Settings > Messages > iMessage...set it to on.

It requires a data connection, so what else would you have on your phone for it to use, other than 3G or wifi?

Also it's iMessage, no r on the end.

edge uses data, and yes it also works over edge.
