imovie 08 suddenly very very slow

I have a late 2007 macbook pro 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram, 250gb memory with about 90 gig's left. I have used imovie 08 frequently and with great results up until about a month ago. Now no matter what project I am working in it is super slow! The big issue is that I can't move the cursor anywhere in the movie window without a beach ball for about 15 seconds. No fine editing possible of any kind because of this... What happened??? I just did a hard drive test and my HD passed without any problems. All other programs run like a champ. I never did generate thumbnails before - always just skipped over that box when imovie opens, so now I'm doing that to see if it makes a difference... Please please help... Apple warranty just ran out (of course) and they want $50 to "attempt" to help me...

You could be low on memory.
I have 4Gb as well, and whenever I work with big projects my system usually only has like 75MB free - it's sluggish sometimes like that
