iMovie 09 editing H.264?

Does iMovie 09 edit H.264 movies? Or does it automatically convert to another codec? I'm going to recieve my new camera (Canon eos 7d) in a few weeks and want to make sure I get the best quality possible. When I import a video I have two choices, Large 960x540 or Full size, which I guess is 1920x 1080i or whatever you used to record with.
