iMovie 09 importing quality

What is the best way, using a DV camera. Should I be changing some settings. It looks like it degrades the quality a bit.

Ive heard that iMovie 06 is the best (but no longer available for free)

Is there any truth in this.

I realised that if you export the movie the quality is better..

yes, that is true, but ive seen better im sure, the output settings on iMovie and iDVD are confusing.

Is it better to output it as an .avi at high quality, and then import that into iDVD?

Apple iMovie, once a good program

It's not you, nor your camera, it's Apple and iMovie, I don't know if they did to sell Final Cut or what, but after iMovie 6 HD, the video output quality is each version worse and worse, I even email apple with a video demo about some most serious problems: you can see it here:
