Imovie 09 problem - help please

Making a dvd for my parents for xmas in imovie 09 and i'm having a problem:

imovie is meant to save your progress as you alter your project

BUT after i have quit and gone back in - it forgets all my transitions :(

is there a way to fix this? thanks
