What's the best solution to optimize slides and old, degraded (scratches, incorrectly exposed, now somewhat blurred) and slightly discolored (red, magenta, etc.) home movies (double 8mm film - some in b/w, VHS/SVHS video), actually transferred to DV tape and to be imported by my still excellent DV camera (Panasonic NV-GS400EG)?

My first experiences with iMovie's latest version are undeceiving. So is color correction - evidently - very basic and also limited: no sharpening, various noise problems in using its tools. Will grading up to FCE (or FCP?) be profitable, even for an 'amateur'? I don't mind any learning process, as long as I can enhance black/white and color in these important movies and slides at a best level and, and the use of FCE/FCP well explained in their 'help' sections or in video lessons by third parties (any suggestions on that?).
