Imovie 4.0.1 makes my screen go black, why?

I've been using iMovie for a few years now, and all of a sudden it goes into full screen play mode as soon as i turn it on and it wont go away, not matter what i try. None of the menus come up. it feels like it is trying to play a movie, but cant. I'm running a dual G5 1.8Ghz and OSX 10.3.9 on a Sony monitor. I dont think its the monitor because the menu bar displays when in black screen, and i can sometimes get the black screen to go away when i "hide" imovie. I'm lost. I hope this is easier than it feels/seems.
