iMovie advice and help needed

Hi all well I'm a Mac newbie,for the past week I've been trying to master iMovie.I've been trying to convert a movie through iMovie then sending it to iDVD to burn but the trouble is the movies always cropped on my tv. I've changed the cropping from Ken burns to fit to screen but the problem still exists any ideas? Also when I'm in iDVD I click The show tv safe area and it shows the areas that will get cropped how can I fit the movie into the window?
