imovie burn to dvd image quality lost

I created a picture slide show in imovie and exported it to idvd to add a menu. When I burn the show to dvd the image quality suffers extremely. I also exported the show from imovie into quicktime & itunes and converted it to HD and I still run into the same problem when I go to burn the dvd. Someone please help me conserve the quality!
