iMovie doesn't recognize older sony digital tape video camera

I have a MacBook Pro (2008) and a Sony DCR-TRV22 digital tape video camera. iMovie does not recognize the camera for import when I connect the USB. My MBPro has no firewire connection. Any suggestions
 
Unfortunately, miniDV video can only be imported via a firewire cable. This is because firewire transmits a continuous flow of data, which is what taped video is. USB transmits in packets.

There is no workaround I'm afraid. You need a firewire Mac.
