iMovie Freezes Up

Everytime I try to edit or make any changes to a movie in iMovie, (We are talking 40 second clips) it freezes up and i spend the next twenty minutes looking at a spinning wheel. I've forced it to quit and re-booted numerous times. I have 58 Gig available on my hard drive so that's not it. I'm not sure what the issue is. Any suggestions?
