IMovie getting frozen at Generating Thumbnails

I uploaded many new files to IMovie and now when I start it up, it gets to Event 5 and Generating Thumbnails and is stuck there for hours. I tried to reboot the computer a few times, closed out of IMovie and restarted but it goes directly to creating thumbnails and then gets stuck. What should I do?
