imovie hd 06 help (imported clips taking way too much space)

Hi, just got my first mac and i'm really excited to be using imovie hd 06. unfortunately, for some reason, when i import short clips from my DV camcorder, each of them winds up being huge. i have about an 8 minute video and it's already using over 50 GB! even 10 second clips show up as using an entire GB each. does anyone know why this is happening? my hard drive won't be able to support much more at this rate... any advice anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. many thanks.

imovie hd converts all videos to dv files which take up a lot of space. Around 13GB per hour but your case seems a little extreme.

How big is your imovie project? Have you looked inside the project (right click on the project and show contents)?
