iMovie HD help -- importing still images?!

I use iMovie quite a lot and know my way around it pretty well. But now I'm having some issues that I've never had before when I go to import photos. I have tried to import both JPEGs and TIFFs, but both appear to be blank when they are done rendering. It seems as if part of the image gets automatically thrown in the trash whenever I try to import it. When that happens, I try to pull it out of the trash. That seems to work fine until I go to put on a Ken Burns effect. When I do that, it comes up blank again after rendering. Everything is fine when I render videos; I just can't do it with still photos. Please help... this is for a huge school project. Thanks in advance, guys!

no, I'm just starting to work on it (but can't go much further without being able to use photos)
