Whenever I import clips into iMovie HD I get a black rectangle on the left side of the clip that only shows up when I import it, the actual file does not have this (as shown in the attachments).

Thanks for the help.

It's hard to tell, but I think it's just scaling the video to fit the size preview window that you have iMovie set too.

Have you tried adjusting the size of the iMovie window? You can just drag the bottom right corner a bit, and see if that does it.
 
Black bar on left in iMovie HD

I'm having the same problem. I took some AVCHD ".mts" files, rewrapped them into Quicktime .mov files using "ClipWrap", and then QuickTime, GraphicConverter, iMovie '11, Finder, etc., can all view it fine. But when I import into iMovie HD (v. 9), the video is squished and has a black rectangle on the left. I'm doing an 1080i project.
