iMovie Help

So I am trying to work on my first project in iMovie and I need some help. I have the AVI video on my desktop and in my iPhoto library but when I try to upload it to iMovie it says no matching video? Is AVI files not supported by iMovie or is there something else I am missing to upload the video?

AVI is not supported in iMovie.

You need to convert to .dv, .mov, or .mp4, then import into iMovie.
