iMovie is running unbearably slow

Hello all,

I'm using iMovie for the first time and all was going well for the first 2 hours but all of a sudden it just crashed. Stopped working for 10+ minutes every time I clicked anything! Clearly, I can't work like that, any ideas on what might be causing it?

I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on a 2013 MackBook Pro Retina with 2.3GHz i7, 16GB ram, SSD and iris pro graphics.

I'm editing about 3 hours of HD footage down to about a 15 minute highlights clip. I'm adding additional audio commentary over the top that has been recorded in quicktime.

Any suggestions welcome

I would watch your Activity Monitor
(Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor)

Or look to the toolbar in iMovie itself, sometimes iMovie is uploading projects in theatre to iCloud etc.
