Okay, here's one.

When my camcorder (Canon ZR 10) is hooked up to my laptop, both iMovie and Final Cut Express can see it.

I can import footage into iMovie no problem. But Final Cut Express first says "No communication" and then when I still try to capture, I get an error screen that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."

What gives?

I've a) re-booted while the camcorder was still on, b) checked my firewire connection repeatedly -- it's fine since iMovie works okay, c) cursed repeatedly.

Any thoughts why iMovie captures video ok but Final Cut doesn't?

Have you updated FCE? I think there's an update for it. If you haven't that might do it for you. I know FCE 1 wouldn't launch on my machine if I didn't have a camera connected (which is silly of course) until I patched it... might try that.

Aha

Thanks for the tip.

Actually I realized I wasn't using the Firewire Basic setting in Easy Setup.

Doh.

Silly me. Shoulda searched the web some more. All good now, thanks!
