iMovie + Macbook Pro + External HD

Just wondering if anyone here using iMovie with a MacBook Pro and an external drive. I was considering using FW800 over USB 2.0. It'll be nice when thunderbolt drives come out but in the mean time I'm wondering if using an external drive is doable with the current FW800 or USB 2.0

FW800 is fine for use with an external drive, whether it be for backups, music, movies, etc. It's 2-3 times faster than USB 2.0.
