imovie not reading my clips- HELP

WHen I put new photos into my movie pane and click play- the cursor goes over all of the clips, but does not 'read' them- will play only one clip. skip most of the 2nd, etc. Very strange. I reinstalled the app- but still doing it. ANy one have any idea what I can do to fix this?
