iMovie not recognizing External Drive?

I want to import massive amounts of footage from my camcorder and I want to import them into my external hard drive. The drive is plugged in, and is recognized by Finder, but when I hit import and try selecting the hard drive to save it, the external drive isn't there.

What am I doing wrong here?

P.S. My portable hard drive works just fine like this.

AFAIK iMovie only imports to the internal drive. (I certainly know iMovie '06 can only use Internal HD for Clip storage, and its likely its the same for iMovie '08 onwards) - this is because external storage might not be fast enough (its certainly slower than SATA).
