iMovie/Old Sony DV Cam question

I recently decided to go back and import some old tapes on a Sony TRV-19 and have a question. I can control the camera fine and import the tapes but it does not separate the clips. Is this normal behavior for capturing from tape? I know in my pre Mac days, the PC I used separated the clips on import. I'm just not sure if this is by design or if I have some configuration setting wrong.

It is a capture option in iMovie HD ('06). Don't know about the newer iMovie versions.
