iMovie problem

I have an avi file that I am trying to import into iMovie but it doesn't play any audio or video. I split the movie up with SplitFuse and it played the audio but had no video. I then ripped a dvd of the same movie with Mactheripper and, first of all most of the files, when opened with VLC said "main: couldn't find a filter for the first part of the conversion main: couldn't set an input pipeline." The one file that did work still wouldn't play audio in iMovie.

I have a MacBook Pro.

I realize this problem is discussed in other threads, but after reading them I still can't figure out what to do.
