imovie problem

I am a new mac user and I am not sure how to get around this issue.

I have two 500mb mpeg4 files that are from a digital camera. For some reason imovie wont import these files for me to create a DVD for the family. How do I make the mpeg4 file useable for imovie?

On my pc I would have checked codec compatibility etc, but have no clue on my new mac

iMovie can't read mp4.

I believe that Quicktime Pro or Visual Hub could convert the file for you. I can't confirm that though, as I don't have either.
