iMovie Problems with Imported Clips Audio

I took a survey recently for a school project.

6 or so people that I surveyed were videotaped with a digital camera.

The video is remarkably nice for a video camera, especially the sound.
But when I drag the clip over to iMovie to import it, the audio never plays.

Even the exported movie doesn't have sound? What's going on? (I'm using an old version, iMovie 3)

What format does your digital camera record video in?

Some of them do it in a way so that the audio/video track don't always come over.

There are a few suggestions on the board on how to demux the video/audio so you can hear it.
