Imovie question

i have a movie i converted to mp4 from avi. when i try to import it to imovie it gives me this... what should i do?

What about using MPEG Streamclip and transcoding the .avi to a QuickTime (.mov) via CMD+E using the Apple Intermediate Codec for video and Uncompressed for sound?
Have you checked if the .mp4 file is not locked or has any other kind of settings in "Sharing & Permissions" (Get Info window in Finder)?
