imovie to dvd

Is there any way to speed up the long process apple uses to get from an imovie project to a finished DVD. Currently imovie exports and encodes as m4v (mpeg4) then when you open iDVD to create a DVD it has to re encode the video to mpeg 2. An unbelievable time wasting process when PC's by pass the whole mpeg 4 thing. A finished 45min imovie project takes another 50 mins to encode to mpeg4 then iDVD takes another 2 hours to encode to mpeg2 for the DVD. There has to be a quicker way to all this. Why can't iMovie export to mpeg 2 ???????? in the first place. I'm running imovie 09 in a new iMac.
Any suggestions out there apart from going back to a PC, heaven forbid !

This is from '08, it shouldn't be too different.

To share your project with other applications through the Media Browser:


Select it in the Project Library, and then choose Share > Media Browser.


Select the size that best matches what you’ll be using the video for. For iDVD, the Large size is best.


Click Share.

Rendering can take up to several minutes depending on the size of your movie. It will also take longer if you render more than one movie size at once.


Open iDVD or your other application and then look for the rendered movies in the Movies window or iLife Media Browser.

For best results in iDVD, select the largest movie that’s available.

missed the point

There seems to be a deliberate attempt by Apple to not want their computers to create DVDs, it seems, well not in a remotely efficient manner anyway. Nothing has improved with iMovie 09. I tried the 'new' export to iDVD which didn't save any time and produced a poorer quality DVD
