IMovie too Slow with External HD

I recently started using IMovie and it was great. But as soon as I connected an external HD(WesterdDigital 500G) it just will not work as smoothly as it did. Scenes freeze and it reacts slow to commands. Any solutions?

If you have a Mac with Firewire, get a Firewire external hard drive.

USB just doesn't have the bandwidth or takes too much CPU time to keep up with programs that want to access files as big as digital video.

This is one of the reasons why so many people were up in arms about removing Firewire from some new Macs.
