iMovie won't import dvd

I have recorded some tv programs on my Sky box then transferred them to my dvd recorder and finalised them to play on any player,they will play on my mac but when i want to import them to iMovie i'm told it is the wrong file type and this is what the import window shows me what am i doing wrong

iMovie can't do that. You need to extract the video from the DVD first. Use Handbrake to do that.

Yep – DVDs are highly compressed and encoded; they aren't really meant to be decoded, but Handbrake is happily a tool that can do that.
