Hello. As soon as I get my iOS update downlaoded and download iMovie, I want to get started on learning iMovie. (Because I am stuck with hotel Wi-Fi, this could take a day or so...)

In the mean time I have some questions about setting up an iMovie workspace...

Questions:
1.) is iMovie "destructive" when you work on video files?

2.) is it true that iPhone makes a copy of everything you import into iMovie?

3.) Can I import in video/audio/photo files from anywhere on my hard-drive?

4.) Can I prevent iMovie from putting imported files into it's default place, and define my own "Staging" area?

I have been working with Audacity for nearly a decade, and have a pretty effective "workflow" for working with audio files, and unless I learn something life-changing, I'd prefer to mimic the environment and workflow I use with Audacity with iMovie.

Thanks.

I am not an iMovie power user, but in my experience it works best when you try to learn “the iMovie way” of doing things rather than trying to mimic a workflow from a different app.

Apple has a great resource for iMovie on both iOS and Mac here:

I think these are the answers to your questions, but hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.

1. Yes iMovie is a non-destructive editing environment. You will still want to make backups of any important files.

2. When you create a project, video and audio are imported (copied) into the project and the originals stay in their location

3. Photos and videos can be imported from the photos app and from iCloud Drive (and I think from other sources that appear in the files browser)

4. The projects browser contains all of your projects, but you can import and export projects as needed.

Here is the official help document for iMovie on iOS that has more information about these topics. https://help.apple.com/imovie/iphone/2.2.9/

Enjoy!
