How come when I try to import some mpegs I got iMovie gives me an error saying "canno't import xxxx.mpg, continuing anyway" I want to edit these clips, what can I do?

iMovie is DV-only?

I wish I could help you, but I've yet to successfully import any video (MPEG, DivX, QuickTime) into iMovie (version 3 here). Near as I can tell, iMovie is ONLY compatible with DV video, which means you need to buy an external analog-to-DV converter and pass your videos through it to re-record them to your Mac. Seems like an overly complex and time-consuming method to me, but it's all I've been able to find on the subject.

I would greatly appreciate any hints to shortcuts.

Quick Time Pro is the Answer

Purchase QT pro for $30 from Apple. QT Pro can export your mpeg to DV. DV can then be imported to iMovie for editing.

Unfortunately, QT will not export the audio in some cases, so that must be recorded separately and imported to and matched up in iMovie. I've used Sound Studio to do this, but that's another $50.00.
