MPEGStreamclip

If your dvd is not encrypted ( which home DVD-Rs are not )
then you can just open up MPEG Streamclip and Select File->Open DVD.

And it will automatically load it for you.

If you are using iMovie HD, 06 or older, Select "export to Quicktime" and select the DV codec ( PAL or NTSC depending on your region ) and 48KHz uncompressed audio. Set "field dominance" to Lower Field first for DV.

If you are using iMovie 08 or higher, Select "Export to Quicktime" and select Apple Intermediate Codec ( AIC ) format and 48KHz uncompressed audio selecting PAL or NTSC depending on your region. Set field dominance to upper field first.

Save that file and then open up iMovie and import it.

You should be good to go.

I haven't used iMovie in a long time so please someone correct me if I've got this workflow set up in a nonideal way
